Reasons...

The Agung is beaten three times in honor of the three sultanates, namely: the Kabuntalan, the Buayan, and the Maguindanao. These sultanates are still thriving today. Whenever music is about to be played, the agung is always beaten 3 times to pay respect for each.

As Philippine folk dance practitioners, we should be careful how we treat the music, the instruments, and the dance, since the cultures we claim to represent are very much alive today and continue to practice, value and hold their traditions sacred. Cultural sensitivity is of utmost importance, and we should do our best to learn more about what it is we are putting on stage.
