birthing stories from my hairdresser (or would you like some steak with that?)
my mom, a woman with whom I have an extremely complex relationship with (as most people do with their parental units), always, to her credit, finds ways to surprise me. i share with you all, unedited, my mom's email letter to me this morning.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY BABY GIRL !!!!!!
I thought about you last night and it brought back memories of my
delivering you that early morning of July . Witnessing the grand birth of my beautiful first born were your Lola, Auntie Dulce, assisting the midwife and her Mom, Ate Naty. I felt the labor pains early morning. Woke up my mother. Since we were not sure, instead of going to the hospital, she took me to her sister's house in Project 4, to be closer to the hospital. We were then living in Project 8 by Villa Socorro. Your Dad then, was at work. Graveyard shift.
But, as soon as as the real contractions came, there was no time to go to the hospital. So the midwife, was summoned to do the honors. Your name was courtesy of our childhood friend's father in Project 4, Mr. Ramos, a Theology professor at the University of Santo Tomas. He didn't like your Dad's first choice of Mignon, who according to Mr. Ramos was a French artist/star who didn't have a happy life. So before we left for home two days later , you were baptized at home by Mr. Ramos. It was considered bad at that time to take the baby out without being baptized yet. But of course, you were officially baptized with Auntie Dulce as a sponsor, at Lourdes Church.
37 years later, you have a family of your own, and yes, you are not a dish (Filet Mignon) but has so much interest in arts and dance. I'm so happy and proud of you. Enjoy the day....... let me know when you'll get your present ( a small cash) from me. I tried getting in touch with you Sunday night and yesterday to give you a haircut but can't reach you.
Love You,
Mom
