Comic Book Movies...

"Maybe you should go back to school"
"Maybe you should have stayed"

Yep. I did it. I went to the 1230am showing of X-Men The Last Stand last night. Snuck in a few bottles of Sierra Nevada's and saw it with CL, S & T. Yep, i'm a big ol' dork along with all the twenty-something techie-geeky dorks in line for the 12, 1230 and 1250 shows. Thankfully I did not have to stand in line, care of Fandanggo and friends who got there before I did. I just waltzed in at midnight with my contraband hidden in my coat pockets. Classy!

This one was a fun ride... but didn't quite have the same Bryan Singer complexity of the first two. But a lot of things do get blown up, and well, how can you not enjoy watching folks with all kinds of powers do all kinds of superhuman things. Quite a few good moments as well... like the much awaited Pyro vs Iceman standoff. Or the Kitty Pryde vs Juggernaut who-gets-to-the-boy-first race (I was like, oh no, she's just a kid and he's a behemoth and he'll crush her!) I had no idea Kelsey Grammer was in the movie as Beast. Kind of neat. Blue and all. Jean's transformation to Phoenix was just scary. Storm got to do more things, but like in the past films, I still wanted more from her (like... be given better lines to deliver... "the best offense is a good defense"... deep!) Always a creepy delight to watch Mystique move around in that body paint of a costume, and when they... when she... Oh, I won't tell. It took me by surprise, so I won't spoil it. Also when Prof. Xavier and Jean... and when Wolverine... Oh, I musn't tell. I won't ruin it for all y'all. Watching Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen share the screen, delivering that comic book dialogue with that ever so classic Shakespearean training... I'll stay up all hours to see that anytime.

And Angel...When we first see him he's just a boy, afraid of what he was becoming, hiding and crying in the bathroom, with all kinds of sharp sick looking implements, cutting himself up, determined to fit in the human world. It was an incredibly poignant moment... it made me think of people who are so ashamed of who they are and are so afraid of not being accepted that they mutilate themselves. He was such a fragile sad creature with the most beautiful wings. And when he soared above the city, literally and metaphorically, I thought, I want wings like that.

Tertulia

"Your success will be in your culture..."
"The Fusionist walks the earth with global eyes...."

Earlier in the evening I attended the salon-esque Tertulia. There was some reading from Anthony Legarda's coffee table/fashion/culture book "Arkiteknik", there was a sneak preview of the accompanying DVD, there was a short fashion show, there was some fare for the famished (the adobo dip was delicious), there was some Q&A. I was actually not planning on going, but somehow fate found me there. And what was going to be a short show-up/show support/meet & greet turned into invitations to folks' homes and offices to look at wall hangings over dinner. It's amazing what can happen when you open your mouth during a Q&A.

AU & ABU: "You must come to our house next Thursday, we're having cocktails..."
LG: "Sure, I love cocktails!"
