"go to Maguindanao..."

"To discover the true meaning of, and to hear the entire story of the mystery that is the Asik, you must go to Maguindanao. It is only there that we can tell you", Faisal said at the Magui Dance Intensive workshop sponsored by Kularts last night.

The Asik is a royal dance, performed by royalty for royalty. Faisal has said many times that Bayanihan has done the Magui people a great disservice by describing the Asik as a "slave dance". "The Asik", according to Faisal, "is NOT a slave dance. It is a royal dance. The history of the dance goes a long way back. It is a highly technical dance. It's meaning is sacred. To call it a slave dance is a great insult to us."

The sagayan and the asik are two of the most important dances of the Magui. He will teach us the Asik on the last day of the workshop.

The dance intensive ends on Friday, June 3rd. It takes place at the Fil. Community Center, at 35 San Juan, SF, 630pm-930pm (monday-friday). It's not too late to sign up. Go to www.kularts.org for more information.
