"it's hard out there if you're a gypsy woman (she's homeless)"

"A lot of people seem to think that it's cool to be a pimp or whore. It's not cool. The reality is dark, evil and appalling and unregulated. The reality is sex trafficking, which is about young women being forced into rooms to have sex however many times a day so that the pimp can take all the money." Dame Anita Roddick

I attended the AOF Oscars Event two Sundays ago. It could not have been a stormier night. Rain came ceaselessly in cold sheets. Yet, the crowd looked fabulous, San Francisco style. I had a terrific time - drinks and food galore amongst the gowns and tiaras, pretty boys in cowboy hats and tuxes, and of course, elegant and lovely ladies in drag. Lots of fun!

I wasn't really paying much attention to the Academy Awards. I don't care who wins what one way or another. The Academy Awards doesn't really hold much weight in my book, and it's a boring show. But I was hoping "Brokeback Mountain" would get the best picture. This was the place to be if it got the award. I was looking forward to the hoopla and the cheers. It's the AOF after all.

What got my attention was Three 6 Mafia's "It's hard out there for a pimp". I was enjoying a delightful gold covered chocolate truffle Oscar on a stick when their performance came on. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was stunned. I watched in horror. It may be 2006, but not much has changed. Women are still a commodity and racial stereotypes still prevail. Nothing is glamourous about being a prostitute. It's degrading, humiliating, and given a choice, most prostitutes probably would prefer to make a living doing something else. I don't understand glorifying misogyny, violence, gangsta's, pimps and ho's. And why are they always black? Is that supposed to be the "black experience"? Blaxpoitation all over again.

I didn't get the performance, it just made me nauseous. I saw a write-up the next day. Obviously it's a heavy issue.

The rest of the evening, though Brokeback didn't get Best Picture, was still fun. Crystal Waters had the crowd dancing. Heck, she had me dancing. She took me back in time when she sang "Gypsy Woman (she's homeless)". It was like back in the day when I was goin' out to clubs dancin' solo with all the pretty gay boys and I was in my early 20's and drinking rolling rock beer, and wearing holey jeans, tshirts and steel square toe boots and the DJ was spinning "Gypsy Woman", except this time I was dancin' solo with the pretty gay boys who were dressed in tuxedos and cowboy hats and I was in my late 30's and drinking champagne and wearing a long black velvet evening skirt, pink silk wrap and rhinestone studded cinderella high heel glass slippers and Crystal Waters was singing "Gypsy Woman" right in front of me.

It's way better the second time around.

She's just like you and me
But she's homeless, she's homeless
As she stands there singing for money.
La da Dee la dee Da...
