I am a product of the Silk Road and the Acapulco Trade...

Good morning Starshine! The earth says hello...

Claiming it all. I forgot it's that month. Well, no, that's not true, I never know when it is that month, our month, my people's month. Happy Asian American Month - enjoy your poke, dim sum, sake, sushi, mochi ice cream (a new and delightful discovery for me), chow mien, lo mien, chow fun, anything over rice, green tea, oolong tea, tea eggs, adobo, sinigang, kare-kare, killing me softly chicarron, anything with garlic fried rice and fried eggs with a side of achara, kimchi, lychees, bibimbap, satay, pad thai, tom yum goong, bagoong, bbq on a stick, fried fish, raw fish, marinated fish, dried fish, fried dried fish, pickled fish, grilled fish, fishballs, fish sauce, fish heads, fish tails, samosas (with your mimosas), wasabi infused anything, and on and on and on.

I'm just happy the days are longer and warmer. More excuses to linger over cultural cuisines consumed by plein air dining while we talk about our people: the writings (on paper or on wire or on wireless), the visuals, the movies, the music, the arts, the theater, the dance - the modern, the traditional, the modern traditional, the poetry (written or slammed), the pop, the intellectuals, the bohemians, the sellouts, the mediocre, the wildly creative & avant garde, the workers, the dreamers, the weavers, the makers of bamboo floors, bamboo furniture, bamboo violins, bamboo table runners with matching table cloths and candle holders, the market, the world market, the maids, the nannies, the domestic overseas workers, the japayukis, the comfort brides getting old and still waiting for justice that is theirs, the veterans waiting and still waiting for what is owed them, the latest in animae & martial arts genre films, the next Stephen Chow flick, Margaret Cho's tatoos, and number 3's obsession with Hello Kitty.

It will be a nice long wonderful meal amidst the iris blooms and butterflies while we toast Iris Chang and the Iron Butterfly and ask ourselves, "what will happen to the book about the Bataan Death March Iris was working on before depression took her?" and "will they ever let Aung San Suu Kyi out of her house?" And we will give ourselves a few moments to honor two of the greatest women of our time.

Now pass the patis, or the shoyu, or the ginger, or the wasabi, or the banana ketchup, or whatever it is you prefer...
