"Fe in the Desert"
I caught the Gala preview last night of Jessica Hagedorn's latest play "Fe in the Desert" at Intersection for the Arts with Campo Santo. Took my breath away. Amazing play... had some of that intense True West flavor, but with that unmistakable Hagedornesque surreality. It was a well casted play - very very strong actors. Margo Hall as Fe was riveting. JV played the character Mook, and boy was I scared of him! You have to watch the play, period.
In the house last night were some awesome powerhouse women... I sat next to Janice Mirikitani, Angela Davis was a few seats away, Ntozake Shange was in front, and of course, Jessica herself. I couldn't believe the space I was in.. all these strong, talented, inspiring women - artists, writers, poets, activists, mothers... in one place! And I was there with them!! Too bad I had a very bad case of laryngitis. I couldn't say a thing. I just had to bask in their presence. It was all I can do really. Which in a way was good, kept me from making a fool of myself.
I had to take in what that all meant... being there in that moment in time - the play, those women, the night. I think the universe is definitely telling me something, and I am listening.
