long weekend
finally, the long weekend. I can relax, procrastinate on all the housechores waiting for me, watch tv, catch a couple of parties, wonder what to do for the 4th and not do it. nice.
speaking of parties, R's working an event he swore he would never, EVER do... a wedding. a wedding is the only event he, as an event planner and manager for parties (large large parties, thousand people attending kind of large parties), prefers not to get involved in. "weddings are crazy", he says. but he got hooked into working this one little wedding, begrudgingly. it's a small wedding, dominic philips (who R worked for the other night for best of the bay) told R, it will be at a house. but it turns out, it isn't any small wedding. it's a few million dollars worth wedding at an estate of a certain aide to the mayor (i don't think i'm allowed to name names), who, it turns out, R went to high school with (SI). so R is going to healdsburg later today (the wedding itself takes place at Mission Dolores church, and R already left the house before 7am today), for a "small" wedding party. attending will be the newsomes (of course), the aliotos, the peter coyotes, the michael bauers of town... a veritable hodgepodge of who's whos and who can make what happen in this fair city. i'm looking forward to what he says about the party. i've worked for a high end catering company as a cater waiter before, and let me tell ya, it doesn't matter how much money (new or old) people have. when they get drunk, it gets ugly and stinky and gross. anyway, good luck to R today. he's a brave man. (at least he gets to see his old school mates).
speaking of more parties, we get to party tomorrow. i'm hoping to attend the bbq at damomoo's and mightymom's. but R reminded me last night that we've accepted a personal invite to Aqua Poolside, the 4th of july to do at the ever so hip and stylish bambuddha lounge. R says we kind of have to go because Gina Milano herself called him and said we'd be on the guest list (no need to get tix! plus it's already sold out). Mizz Milano is one of the partners at Bambuddha, and she's really sweet and always invites us to her events (and she always has fabulous shoes!). on the one hand, i'd like to go to and get all dolled up for Aqua and hang by the pool and nosh on cleverly served apps and have champagne and watch fire dancers and lookit hot young bodies all afternoon. but on the other hand, do i really want to deal with figuring out what to wear (what DOES one wear to an uber stylish poolside party at one of the hippest lounges in a town where one minute it's warm and sunny and the next its foggy and colder than a dogs wet nose?). i was hoping to just chill with the Laxa's and have oysters and too much beer and let the kiddies run around in the hot sun. i'd like to attend both events... maybe i can. but i'll have to see.
other things on the list... since R's out workin' today, i promised the kids we'd go see a movie and have lunch. now how many 7-11 year old kids do you know says, "let's have sushi for lunch before we see a movie downtown on saturday mom"? and then they proceed to argue about which restaurant has better sushi. they also argue about their favourite mexican joints. raffy actually said once, "the food at la altena is the best, the ingredients are fresh, but the service stinks!" my son the food critic. i don't know, they have surpassed me in many ways. i'm like, oooh nachos!
what to do on the day of the 4th itself? hmmm, there's always the events at crissy field, or the fireworks on pier 39... but it all seems so... crowded. the last few years we've always gone to Oregon for the 4th. we watch the small town parade in windy port orford (there's the band, the firetrucks, they throw all kinds of candy and taffy at the kids... oh they love it! heck, i love it!), then go to grandma's and grandpa's for lunch and more live music, then at night we go to the beach and watch the fireworks over a bonfire and smores. it's all so small town, americana, red, white and blueberry pie. i've enjoyed the little expedition up north because i get to watch white rural americans be american and proud and all (it's so exotic to me). also, we get to see family and have yummy homemade everything. but this year, it's different. R doesn't want to go up since grandpa's not there, and we were just up there, and frankly, we're road weary. but now we're left with the question... what to do?
living in the city has perks... lavish parties, sushi and movies, family day at yerba buena gardens and picnics at crissy field. i guess it's time we take advantage of it.
whatever we decide to do, i'm sure it will be a good weekend. and, there's always the laundry.
