more to do's, &, the beautiful, the bored and the busy....

number one has a performance at their school tonight. she will be singing a couple of tunes with other kids, like a chorus, song and dance kind of thing, called dare to perform. they've been working on this since school started. a music director/conductor works with them, and they put together a show this time of year. i saw the show last year, number one was not performing, but the kids that did perform were very talented, and it was a blast. this year, she'll be singing and dancing with the other kids. they perform tunes from Rent, Wicked, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (my new philosophy), etc. i'm excited for her, and a little anxious. there's a lot of running around involved to get her to back to school in time... first gotta get the kids dinner, gotta keep number one (and her vocal chords) warm, gotta get her to the school an hour before the show, and on and on. ah, family life.

speaking of family life... number 3's birthday to do went really well. a few of her friends came and watched the dead henson's show at 12 galaxies with us. so much fun!! the girls had a table right by the front and they danced and sang and looked like adorable little groupies drinking their juice boxes and asking the band for autographs after the show. then it was pizza and ice cream cake at the house afterwards. earlier that day was my cousin's kid's baptism. i was driving all over town, dropping off R at the construction site, going to the church, driving to the reception, then picking up the cake, and R at the construction site, picking up number 1 at her saturday rehearsal/performance program, making sure we got to 12 galaxies by 4, etc etc. nice full day. it was wonderful to see family... but i was exhausted on sunday.

i took a 4 hour nap the next day, thinking i was just going to chill. but no. i woke up and was told there's a family dinner at our house. my bro in law and little R went to Chinatown during the day to buy ingredients for a chinese dinner they made for the family... little R put the pot stickers together, from scratch. it wasn't a bad dinner at all, considering it was their first attempt.

and then, a friend reminded me that last night was also the opening night party for Les Amis. i didn't get to chill as much as i wanted, but at least i didn't have to cook anything, and i got to eat and drink a lot. it's been a while since i've been to a restaurant opening. it was both interesting and boring to me. interesting to see the people there and taste the delicious hors d ouvres being passed around, nice to have the champagne flowing too. but also boring in some way... unless you know people, even though it was crowded, it was a little challenging to meet folks. maybe i was just tired. or maybe i just don't have much in common with the people that were there whom i did know. (they like to rehash stories of their drunken escapades, which i'm sure is all fun and hilarious if you were there, but, that's just it, you had to be there).

it was nice to see Pascal, all decked in his tuxedo with his beautiful date Ana in her elegant grey/silver raw silk dress. we talked a little bit about the champagne and creme brulee pairing he recommended the night before, etc. i talked to the interior designer, who i actually know and have always found difficult to talk to. i asked him to tell me more about the paintings and artists he chose to fill the walls with. he answered, "his name is .... (he told me the name but i forget it right now) and each painting cost $1,000". i wanted to say, "well that's very interesting but that wasn't my question", but i decided i probably wouldn't get too far with him if i wanted to talk about art, specially when i mentioned that some of the painting reminded me of de Kooning and Clifford Still, he kind of just looked at me and blinked. i thought, hmmm, where's more champagne?

anyway, it was a good party, in that it was well attended by all these beautiful and hipper than thou kind of people, other restauranteurs, club owners and image makers. but i was tired, and i was tired of them. all the conversation was boring and self centered. i could only pretend to be interested for so long. i noted last night, just because you are beautiful and young and well dressed, does not necessarily mean you are interesting or have anything interesting to say. and they tend not to be very friendly either, they like to stay within their little cliques. but at least they are nice to look at. "just don't speak..."

i was probably just really tired.

the entire weekend was filled with activity, and it was fantastic. from the amazing dinner and extremely interesting conversation about art and love and life at Les Amis with the delightful and verbose dong kwan, who looked quite dashing in his black velvet blazer (ask Randy would have approved), to rockin' to Luce at Slims (what a totally awesome show, and they ended the 2nd encore with special guest Boz Scaggs (!!!) singing Sarah Smile . i had no idea Scaggs owns Slims. that show just put me in such a happy mood the rest of the weekend), to my cousin's kids's baptism (i got to see family i haven't seen in years and it was wonderful), to the Dead Hensons family concert (we love DH!!) and the ice cream cake afterwards, to resting Sunday afternoon and then having homemade chinese dinner by my son and his uncle, and finally, ending the weekend back at Les Amis for the opening party. whew! and now it's monday, and there's a whole bunch more of to do's about to take place.

life is busy, and it's good to be busy.
